Reading strategies

Reading strategies to apply:

 

  • Predict content and structure of text before reading based on titles, subtitles and graphics.
  • Locate known and unknown information on concept map.
  • Add words and phrases to map during reading.
  • Note new understanding by making changes in concept map.

 

 

  • Predict-make predictions/guesses about the text
  • Visualize-create a picture in your mind based upon text
  • Connect-make a connection to a real life experience
  • Question-ask questions during reading of text
  • Clarify-stop reading to check for understanding for own text
  • Evaluate-make a judgement based upon finished reading of text

 

 

  • Number the paragraphs
  • Chunk the paragraphs
  • Underline and circle-with a purpose!
  • Makes notes:  "What is author saying?" 
  • Dig deeper into text...change verbs using power verbs 

 

 

Read something everyday...twenty minutes a night to twenty minutes three times a week has been statistically proven successful in raising reading comprehension.
